Changes to Unemployment Compensation Laws May Mean Increased Job Seekers

Effective since Aug. 1st, new changes to Florida’s unemployment compensation laws may mean an increase in potential applicants contacting your business, in person or online through the Employ Florida Marketplace
, the state’s comprehensive database of job postings.
Under the new regulations signed by Gov. Rick Scott on June 27th, individuals filing claims for unemployment compensation are required to make contact with five potential employers weekly and keep records of such interactions online.

Other reforms have taken place and a few more will continue to take place over the next few months, such as the revamped definition of misconduct and employer tax reductions.
According to the State of Florida's Agency for Workforce Innovation’s website, misconduct is now defined as “any action that demonstrates conscious disregard of an employer’s interests and is found to be a deliberate disregard or violation of reasonable standards of behavior, and may include activities that did not occur at the workplace or during working hours”.
The new regulations will also bring reductions in employer taxes effective Jan. 1, 2012.
